Student Research Program (SRP)

The Student Research Program (SRP) fellowship requires a commitment to scholarly activities.

Applications for academic year SRP fellowships are due June 30. Applications are evaluated by the SD INBRE SRP Approval Committee made up of: SD INBRE Director Dr. Victor Huber, a representative from the USD Honors Program, and a representative from each SD INBRE partner institution. Each committee member evaluates the applications individually and then the final selection is made at a group meeting at which all applications are discussed. It is the undergraduate fellows who are selected NOT the undergraduate fellow/mentor team.

Applicants will be notified of an SRP Fellowship Award in early August after the approval committee meeting.

Requirements of SRP Fellows

eRA Commons ID: Fellows must acquire an eRA Commons ID, log into eRA Commons, and complete the user profile information to activate eRA Commons account.
Presentations: Recipients of a SRP fellowship are required to present their research at the SD INBRE Winter Research Conference (January) or the SD INBRE Convocation (July). Additional presentations are encouraged, especially those presentations that can be made at Regional (Central Region) and National (NISBRE) meetings that are organized by the IDeA program.
Training: Recipients will complete training in Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) and basic laboratory safety training, as well as any training that is specific to their host lab, host institution, and fellowship program.

Selection Process

Evaluation criteria used for selection of fellows:

The number of fellows to be selected each summer depends upon how many each partner institution can support from their SD BRIN or other funds. Some institutions will also be supporting undergraduate fellows for academic year research. All salary support is paid by the home institution to the fellows as is the $2000 to the laboratory of the mentor to purchase supplies.

Successful candidates will be required to complete a commitment agreement prior to the beginning of the fellowship. It spells out the commitment that we expect from a fellow in our program.

Notification of SRP Fellowship Award

An email from the Chairperson of the SD INBRE Student Research Program Approval Committee will be used to inform applicants of the committee decision. Applicants that are not selected are encouraged to meet with their campus liaison to determine ways to improve their application for future submission cycles.
