South Dakota Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network

SD INBRE History

The National Institute of General Medical Science (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) program. The South Dakota IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (SD INBRE) received its initial three years of funding from this program starting in 2002. Since then, four consecutive five-year grants have been awarded with a fifth award pending. To date, SD INBRE has brought over $78 million for research into South Dakota, and that number will continue to grow with the anticipated support for our network through 2031.

SD INBRE Program Goals

Expand the research capacity in South Dakota in the area of cell biology and the control of cell and microbial growth.
Align core resources with SD INBRE investigators.
Enhance SD INBRE faculty development in scholarship, grantsmanship, and mentorship.
Provide research opportunities for SD INBRE undergraduate students at partner institutions.
Use outreach programs to engage students in SD INBRE research opportunities.
Encourage different perspectives of SD INBRE members through unique collaborations and learning environments.
