Dr. Scholten’s research on ischemic preconditioning (IPC) has evolved from examining its lack of impact on anaerobic performance to demonstrating its benefits for aerobic efforts lasting three to six minutes. In 2024, we investigated whether these improvements were due to reduced muscular fatigue, but our preliminary findings indicate no significant effect. Our next phase will assess blood flow using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and Doppler ultrasound to explore a potential nitric oxide-mediated response, with early NIRS data suggesting IPC increases muscle oxygen saturation for about two minutes post-intervention.
